Writing Meme Day 9
Tue, May. 11th, 2010 04:52 pm( the questions )
9. How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.
Yeah~ I was dreading this one. How should I know? They introduce themselves, I say hi, write about them and get to know them that way. The only bit I have a say in is the black and white of who they are. For example, Nol! Crown prince of Raykin, archer for the King's Own, proposed to Nimay only to be turned down, and something else spoiler-related, but again, that's another fact rather than character. The rest of it I just find out as I'm writing. I don't make them so much as find out who they are, which I do by writing them.
Everyone (or rather, everyone who matters) gets a short story or a drabble/character meme or something written for them before they appear in SH, enough at least that I feel comfortable writing them. This is why I'm on a bit of a Kazinian royals kick recently: Assili and Sahid are due to make their appearances in a few chapters and I want to know them before they rock up. We're getting there. Learning that Assili isn't as much like Shizaaqa as Nol fears, so that's nice. She's still frustrating as all hell to him, tho XD Yay, Kazinian authority <3
I guess the best way of figuring them out is putting them with characters I already know, or in situations that are absolutely typical of them. Then by the time they're pulled roughly out of their comfort zones, I'm not sorta left high and dry.
