Title~ Black
Author~ Annarti
Disclaimer~ Avatar and all related characters belong to Nickelodeon.
Warnings~ Spoilers for the finale.
Notes~ Apart from writing friends' characters, I haven't written fanfic in YEARS, not since ye olde Pokémon days, and that was still my (shitty) characters. Never written any officially copyrighted characters before. Be nice~ =( So yersh. My headcanon says Azula didn't get bumped off, cos by that point? She's far too pathetic and pitiable for any of the main characters to want to kill her. My thinking is that she got thrown in prison instead, probably after Aang did some godmoddy spiritbending on her and yoinked her phire.
ANYWAY. Yes. Ty Lee visits her in prison, dundunDUNNNN.
~ ~ ~
‘Are you sure you want to do this?’
Ty Lee tangled her fingers with the dark sleeve of her Kyoshi uniform and looked over the cold, hard walls of the prison walls, hoping her makeup and the flickering lighting would make the guard think she was merely rolling her eyes. ‘Of course I do!’ she answered. ‘She was one of my best friends. Why wouldn’t I?’
The guard wasn’t so sure. ‘You and Mai are the ones she raves about most,’ he warned. ‘And not in the positive way, either.’
The newly-recruited Kyoshi warrior shook her head, braid flicking against her back. ‘That’s why I have to see her. She’s probably swimming in negative energy now, and that can’t be good for her aura.’
The guard sighed and scratched behind his head before reluctantly pulling his helmet back on. ‘This way,’ he told her, his muffled voice taking on its official tones once more.
Ty Lee’s steps echoed down the stone corridors as she followed the guard past door after iron door. They may have been strong enough to hold back the prisoners, but their auras made her feel small and scared. These were bright crimson with rage, blue-grey with despair. What would she see behind Azula’s door?
The guard stopped outside one of the doors, the same as all the others but for the two extra guards flanking it. It was unmistakably darker than all the others, almost black with blind hatred.
‘Oh, Azula…’
‘Do you want to go back?’ the guard asked her.
She shook her head again. ‘No.’
‘I’ll come in with you as a precaution. Ready?’
Ty Lee nodded as the two guards at the door hauled the iron bolts aside with loud clanking noises, then pulled the door open. She gasped and took a step back.
Azula stood with her face against the bars of her cell, eyes wild behind the ragged mess of hair, teeth bared and hissing with angered breaths. Her hands were bound behind her, though she struggled with the rattling chains to pull herself free. Her maddened eyes narrowed and she stilled when she recognised Ty Lee past her warrior’s makeup.
‘What are you doing here?’ the fallen princess sneered.
‘I-I came to see you, Azula,’ Ty Lee tried, clasping her hands over her chest as she took the first nervous step though the doorway. The guard followed her to stand unobtrusively by the door.
‘Why?’ Azula demanded. Even her voice, normally so even and clinical, was just barely in control. It quivered with the insanity Ty Lee had been warned about.
‘To cheer you up?’ She cringed, knowing how lame that sounded as soon as she said it. ‘Azula, I—’
Azula interrupted with a sharp crack of laughter. ‘To cheer me up?’ The chains clattered behind her again as her shoulders shook with dark laughter. ‘You put me here, Ty Lee!’ she screeched.
Ty Lee cringed again and held up her hands defensively. ‘I know, I know, I’m sorry, Azula! I didn’t—I’m sorry!’ She hid her face in her hands when the princess screamed out again.
‘You and Mai!’ she snapped. ‘When I get out of here, you’re the first I’m coming after!’
‘Azula, I never meant for any of this to happen!’ She could feel tears stinging her eyes. ‘I just—you and Mai are my best friends. I didn’t want to see you fighting!’
Azula shook her head, insane eyes twitching wildly as she watched her former cohort. ‘Get out,’ she hissed. ‘Get out and never return. You betrayed me and I never want to see your face again! GET OUT!’
‘Azula, I just—’
‘LEAVE!’
