Got my assignment back today~ =D 74%, which is ONE MARK short of a distinction. ONE MARK. I told my tutor afterwards that it was cruel and unusual punishment :< She said it was ENCOURAGEMENT because I was right on the money but missed one major point. But what I DID say was really good, and apparently there were only 5 people with higher marks than me.

So... yay?

But then we went on to talk about grammar for half the tute, which made me silently scream with inner turmoil because it was all on apostrophes and its/it's and sentence fragments and all this stuff I swear I had perfected by year 6.

Sentence: "Pan's Labyrinth," "Some Movie," and Another Movie were all discussed in Some Bloke's book, "Book title."
Tutor: What's wrong with this sentence?
Me: *OH GOD I FEEL SO PATRONISED* Titles should be italicised~ not quotation marks or underline.
Tutor: Well, italicised or underlined, but as long as you're consistent.
Me: No, italicised. Underline means, 'I want to put this in italics but I don't know how.' =D
Tutor: ...I'll accept underlines as well =D
Me: ... *cries a little inside. I didn't get one of three Desktop Publishing 20s in the state for NOTHING, woman, don't you contradict me on style =P*

I think she hates me now.

God that was YOU. She said someone pulled her up for that.

I went apostrophes, sentence fragments and keeping it internally consistent. Apparently someone made her go on the FLO site and check the UNI Essay writing guide.

Personally I am happy with internally consistent. I don't like the idea of putting books and films under different formats. Otherwise it gets confusing, when you start referring to shooting scripts, script books and television. Television is different to film, and you reference the production company of the show.

But what if your referencing a DVD extra not by that company!? My mind spins!

As you can tell, I wrote a 3'500 word essay on Doctor Who Academic texts last semester, and found a lot of things that aren't one thing or the other.

Anyway, enjoy your 74%, I got 35%.

Cheers,

Colonel Barker.

Italics only for titles, otherwise it just starts looking messy and crap ><

Okay, I agree with that. Italics for all titles!

Your legacy will live on.

Horrah!

Actually, what's acceptable depends on what format your tutor want you to adhere to. The APA wants different things than the MLA, for example. (Unfortunately the only experience I have with the APA is how to make references and I do not get them. *holds her MLA close*)

Underlines look ugly on a printed essay when italics take exactly the same amount of effort. It means, 'I want to put this in italics but don't know how,' like if you're handwriting it or using a typewriter in ye olde times.

After getting a 20 for English and a 20 for Desktop Publishing (again, three sum total awarded to the entire STATE) I know my stuff X3

I was just sick of her talking like every single person in the class sucked at grammar. For the people who STILL don't know that rough-as-guts basics, there should be an extra class. That, or hold one tute that's grammar-focused, and you only have to rock up to it if it says 'your grammar sux =(' on your last essay. How many hours of my life have been wasted on its/it's and sentence fragments? D:
