annarti: (why does it have to be like that?)

Holy fuck Victoria.

They showed one shot of about five burnt out cars that were in positions as though they'd had a crash, because the fire front changed direction while they were on the road and they'd crashed trying to get away. THAT is my worst nightmare right there. Just seeing the fire coming towards you, bush on either side of the road, and there's NOTHING you can do about it.

South Australia has been SO lucky this heatwave. We've had little patches but nothing serious. This? Is worse than Ash Wednesday.

News says the fires were lit by arsonists. If they're caught, they'll be charged with murder. I bloody hope they are.

I was literally just reading about that and it's so horrifying, I can't even imagine. Even if you do manage to escape the fires, your whole TOWN being gone is just... Jesus. Do you know if it's dying down at all?

It's not really, no. Today's been the worst day of it so far, because of the cool change. The wind's been coming down from the north for the last... weeks of heatwave, but today it turned around, so it blew the fire over a bit and now it's going back north again.

We've sent about a hundred of our firies and Elvis (water-dumping helicopter) over there to help deal with it. Not all of them cos we're hardly out of danger ourselves yet.

*hopes arsonists get caught, half-hopes they get caught by their own arson rather than the cops*

*also hopes for RAIN and less heat*

We have rain! It's just in the wrong end of the country! Queensland's flooded and Victoria's on fire. This is why we don't have terrorists. We've got NATURE.

Cool change has finally come through--and I mean properly this time, 20-ish degrees and everything--so HOPEFULLY it'll start raining down there a lot.

It's terrifying. We have been so, so incredibly lucky, cos the CFS have been closely monitoring known arsonists, so they haven't had a chance to go out and be idiots.

So many people dead this time. We've all got a bit blase over the last decade, I think, with all the big fires running through in 1999 and so on with no fatalities and only a few houses lost.

As for the arsonists, I hope they shut those murdering sons of bitches away for life.

Tell me about it. We've got our bushfire action plan sorted: shove as much stuff in the cars as time permits then LEG IT. AWAY FROM TREES. There's nothing saving this place if a bushfire comes through.

I'm with Alyssa: when they're caught--and they bloody BETTER be--a representative of each of the 181 deaths so far can line up in an orderly fashion to get their 15 minutes with him.

It really is devestating, isn't it? Even if you are in another state and seeing it from a distance, you know that it could so easily be here.

*hugs* I'm glad that you and Alyssa are safe and well and in another state.

Well, relatively safe. Still dry as all hell and due for more heat and north winds by the end of the week. Cross fingers we make it through summer D:

Dry here too. I saw the temperatures predicted for Perth today and cringed. Looks like more hot weather on the way.

Consider fingers duly crossed.
