For the uneducated (ie, those without summer) here, have a summer footwear 101:

THONGS
One strap over the sort of not quite toes area, and the bit going between big toe and the toe next to it. Made of rubber or plastic, but the rubber ones are more comfortable. That's it. Nothing else constitutes a thong.

FLIP FLOPS
More generic. Either a sort of stylish thong thing (made with real leather or big plastic jewels or something sparkly) or~ just covering the not-quite-toes. Mostly we just call these shoes. Thongs are NEVER called flip flops. They're called thongs.

SANDALS
Made of leather or imitation leather, always has a buckle. Pretty much what defines a sandal. Also no heel. Worn at school in your earlier years, and also by those over 75, usually with white socks pulled up to your knees :D

CROCS
FUGLY. DO NOT WEAR THEM. THEY ARE WORN BY PEOPLE IN THEIR THIRTIES AND FORTIES WHO WISH THEY WERE FIFTEEN AGAIN.

THESE ARE JUST SHOES
Despite buckle and open toes, no, we don't call them sandals. They have a heel and they're sexy. Sandals are not.

BLOODY INSANE
These are not shoes. They are a NAIL being driven into your HEEL.

This public service announcement brought to you by the People Who Have Summer Foundation. Namely me and Cassie.

I've found that sort of thing a bit icky since watching the nail in the foot scene in Home Alone. :(

... Also I think Crocs can be cute. On little kids. In the right colours. If they have those little button things they use to cover up the holes.

Small children are allowed to wear them cos they don't have to be fashionable, and it's probably their 30-40 year old parents who bought them because they wanted to be 15 again >>
