Writing Meme Day 15
Mon, May. 17th, 2010 05:04 pm( the questions )
15. Midway question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!
Joanne Harris! My faaavourite author ever. Started with seeing the Chocolat movie, finding out it was based on a novel, and I've bought every one of her books since then :D 'cept blueeyedboy because it wasn't out yet when I was last in the vicinity of a book shop. But yes. I love how completely different her plots are to anything I've ever read. I love the way she can describe a character in two or three words and give you a complete and perfect picture of them in your head. There are always so many secondary characters, but you know them all because they paint the picture of the little village the story's set in. I love how strong her characters are and how much you get sucked into their stories, so that you can completely sympathise when things go wrong. I love the subtle not-quite-magic that you can either believe in or just accept as part of the character's own beliefs. I love the twists that you never see coming, but damnit they make so much sense. I LOVE ROUX omg he's awesome, especially in The Lollipop Shoes.
Other authors I love but can't be arsed talking about, David Eddings (almost purely for the Belgariad), John Marsden and Arthur Golden (okay so I've only read Memoirs of a Geisha. It's beautiful. Shush.)
And, because question 30 is, well, broken, I'll leave that one to be the unpublished writers :D
