NaNoWriMo 2019

annarti: (This post is all about cricket)
I'm 1500 words off of winning NaNo with Steel with a full Saturday still to play with, so I thought I'd take a bit of a break to... write about writing. YEP. I was going to go to the cricket this evening after work, but the weather is shit. It's cold and wet and there's no heating at the Oval. Despite that, it's day one of the Test and we've already had half the attendance of the entire Gabba Test, and they had gorgeous weather. Suck it, Brisbane.

Anyway. I've tried NaNo once before with SH, I think it was during Tarnish, and failed horribly. Last year I challenged myself to 60k, despite being in Sydney for the first three days of the month, and still finished I think with like two days to spare. The pressure is so much more with SH. I feel like I have to make it good. It's not just a fun romp through the desert/forest/ocean/castle/whatever. This is the last novel! Shit's gotten real!

Also, if I do manage to get a full chapter done and posted tomorrow, I'll have written 11 chapters in a month. Even if I don't get that full chapter done tomorrow, there's nowhere near 11 chapters left in the book.

...

8DDD

I am on a rollSteel right now, and there are a few things I'd really like to make happen before I go anywhere, just some cute little flavour touches. For each kingdom, I'd like to make up, say, ten of the following to have as things to pick at whenever they come up in-story:

Animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and insects. Maybe 2-3 of each)
Fruit
Vegetables
Meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, nibblies/snacks; 2-3 of each here, too)

World history would also be useful. Outside of what Yan was up to, I've really got nothing. Comes from living in a country with almost nothing recorded prior to about 200 years ago, I think. I'm not used to a thousand years of history. The more I've written of ancient history, the more tempted I am to make the founding of Raykin into a NaNo. Watch this space.

That's all I wanted to mention. Lessee about that final 1.5k...

EDIT 11PM WON NANO 50k :D

I am BACK in the land of the living. I WON NANO! Posted the final chapter last night while sipping on a celebratory spiced rum mojito at Horizons cocktail bar down at the beach, and it was just jolly delightful. Also gave myself an extra challenge this time of making 2000 words per chapter, so 60k by the end instead of 50k. Just cos. I've always felt the 1667-word chapters to be a bit short and 2000 felt about right.

It was fun! I preeeetty much had no life for the entire month of November, the house is a mess and I just spent the last hour and a half deleting banked up emails (not even actioning those that need to be actioned yet, that was JUST deleting them), but I really had fun. It's all up on [livejournal.com profile] yrae for your reading pleasure. It fulfilled two of my storytelling method dreams of watching a character grow up from birth with each new chapter being another birthday for the character, and telling the story of the main character through the POV of the protagonist. And GOD it was fun. It has pirates, ladies being fierce, gay, sea dragons (not gay sea dragons, but there ARE gay pirates), treasure hunts, sexy ladies who I swear I will draw at some point annnnnd it's just a lot of fun. Would anyone be interested if I made it a Kindle file? Idk how to make it but I will if anyone wants it!

ANYWAY. I'm going to celebrate by tidying the house, having a looong shower, reading a book in the garden instead of writing one, doing all that email and banking shit I haven't done (haven't missed any bills or payments, though, cos I'm not that dumb) annnnnnd going to Brick + Mortar for lunch followed by Red Cacao for dessert.

One of the emails--or more accurately, string of emails--that I just went through was Mrs Patel signing up for an Oyster card using my gmail address. I had 'thank you for registering your Oyster card' and confirmation that her photo has been accepted, and now I'm getting information about bus route closures in London. Hopefully she figures this out at some point, but I feel like I'm probably going to get an 'I forgot my username/password' email some time.

o I want to do NaNoWriMo, but I lack a) story and b) time. So that sort of cancels that out.

o 9:30 is a crap time for Good News Week to start. The thing before it is one of those ones that goes 15 minutes overtime, and GNW itself tends to go about half an hour overtime. I'm~ not going to be going to bed until quarter past 11. I'm so skipping it from now on and downloading it on Tuesdays. Sucked in, Channel 10, I'm not watching your ads anymore.

o Started on Kazin girl! The forest idea scares me. I'm going to turn half of it into padi fields.

o I have an urge to make Yoshi layouts again. I've kinda had Malaysia for well over a year now >>
