Yesterday, I finished Gold! Book three of Silent Harmony is finally done! I am so, so very stoked. I love everything. I'm quite proud of how it all came together, after so many bombshells the characters dropped on me all through it. One book to go, and I have effectively zero ideas for it. Thiras will turn up somewhere, but that's all I've got. I don't know the ending, I don't know the beginning, it's wide open.

For each book I've had a preceding (sort of) NaNo to develop the featured kingdom (Vermilion for Llayad, Bouquet for Kazin and, to a lesser extent, Blade Archer for Raykin. I'd been doing so many shorts around that time, though, that Raykin was already pretty well-developed by that point) so I'll give a shot at a NaNo for Tsayth, too. I mean, working full time will make such things tricky, but I'll try! Between now and then, I'll read back over Tarnish and Gold as I did Rust at the beginning of the year and get Thoughts together for the rewrite (because boy oh boy do I have Thoughts on Rust already), and I'll get a plan and maybe an outline together for Steel.

I've also worked out a method the last few months while I've been on a roll: write about the chapter in the spoiler book before I write the actual chapter. It's been great for nutting out problems that would inevitably come up and otherwise become a block. See if I can keep that up for the last book. I might write the thing in a year, you never know. I'm excited! SO excited!

I had hoped to go to Bridgewater Mill yesterday to write the last chapter, purely so at the end of it I could have a celebratory cocktail, but unfortunately they were closed for a private function, so I finished it at Red Cacao instead. Somewhat fitting, since I've been there every Saturday for writing for the last month or so XD Then ordered a pizza with garlic bread for dinner, opened a nice bottle of Chris Ringland shiraz to go with it, and drew Nol looking far more badarse than he actually feels. So that was pretty cool. Still want to go get a cocktail somewhere for celebration, too.

I FINISHED GOLD! I'M SO HAPPYYYYYY!!!!!

It's amazing* how quickly writing happens when I have a solid plan and outline and when I know what's happening. Chapter in a week, woo! I have less of a chapter-by-chapter outline now and more of just a lump of plot points, arranged in such a way that would be nice if they happen that way. Now that I have a laptop with a battery that charges again, I'd love to do the oh-so-cliché coffee shop writing thing some day. I feel like it'd have to be either a really crappy, wintry day where you curl up in the corner of the bench seat, or a really gorgeous day to sit outside with an iced coffee. At this stage it'll proooobably be more the crappy weather day. It's very suddenly autumn now, cool nights and nice-to-meh days. But I'm getting sidetracked.

Whenever I come back to writing after a massive, usually involuntary break, I feel like I'm giving my old friends a big hug. I've missed these people so much! It's been 11 months since I wrote anything, but the last time I wrote Nol was in October 2015, and he wasn't even the POV character for that chapter. Previous Nol chapter was a few weeks before that. That is a LONG time between drinks. Don't lose the knack for him, though. He's still in my head as one of the three strongest voices. God I love 'im :< I hope things work out for him somehow, I really do. He needs a hug. Maybe I should make Assili hug him in the next chapter. That'd really confuse him.

I theoretically have about nine chapters left, and there are nine months left in the year. Never that simple, of course, but wouldn't it be nice? If no other characters throw spanners in the works and make me replot this thing again. I swear this is why Gold has been taking so long. The other two books didn't require such heavy replotting halfway through. There were some minor adjustments, but no bombshells I didn't see coming from the beginning. I keep saying it, but I can't wait until I've finished and can start on the rewrite. SO MUCH will suddenly make sense. I'll be able to cut swathes of useless threads away that end up going nowhere or contradicting things. Slip in foreshadowing and details about upcoming people and things and events. Make things make sense as they happen. Everything feels like such a clusterfuck right now--I started this current iteration in 2007 after three false starts, and if I knew how this thing was going to end I probably would've restarted a dozen more times before now, too. But I need to get to the end before I know what it is.

Am I weird for not knowing how it ends? I have ideas and theories, I know a few things that are going likely to come into play, but I mean geeze, the plot of Gold has changed so drastically since I first wrote the outline that I'm loathe to plan anything so far down the track as the end. When I get started on Steel, then I'll know where the end is. I just want Gold DONE so I can finally get to it. This is the year. I'll make damn sure of it.

I got a good chunk of plotting done, know what's happening with the main plot for the rest of the story, but all the side-plots, mostly in Wensleydale, are just... ugh. They all feel so disjointed and nothing's tying back together. I keep reminding myself that there's still another book, I don't have to tie all the loose ends up in this one, but it'd be nice to tie up one or two, y'know? I've got all these potentially major events that, when I think about them, have no tangible effect whether the character/s live or die. But then if I try and make that event have an impact on the plot, then I've got yet another loose end. Finally bringing Raykin back into things, while awesome, has kinda made Llayad irrelevant. So that's. That's where things are there. Mrr.

Writing is hard. I still plan on having a(nother) rejigged outline complete this month, tho. Just you watch.

Random writing thoughts, cos I'm not bloody WRITING and haven't managed a goddamn chapter all year:

  • Make a character who is a pigment hunter. I'm doing that some time. Maybe a NaNo or something? Idk if it could go for a full novel(la) but I want one.

  • How lovely would it be to make the prose actually sound like the language? Get rid of as many S-es as possible during the Raykinian bits and shove even more into Kazin. Would anyone notice? Probably not because the possessive 's is impossible to eliminate, but... I still want to keep it in mind for the rewrite.

  • Frig I had a third one. Dangit. It was a really good one, too. Oh well. OH WAIT I remember, it had nothing to do with writing and that's why I forgot. But like. The Pokémonathon and adapt them to Tsyllaes. No way it'd ever happen because there's a frigging thousand of them now, but I still have dreams.

I want to draw. I'mma put a movie on and do just that.

I totally got to shoot down the State Treasurer at work today 8D THE POWER!!!!!!!!!1

I kinda never want to contextualise that.

I was going to have a totally pampering day tomorrow, but then I got a text from Alex's friend to go to lunch and I went HELL YES I want to make a new friend! Also I didn't get around to booking a massage, so there's that. Also I still have all that crap to do that I didn't get to do because of the portfolio. Last night I cracked Office (FINALLY) and the night before that was Adobe Creative Cloud (ALSO FINALLY), tonight was tidy the house, which I did all of except sweeping and de-cobwebbing the garage because the car was in there and I couldn't be arsed moving it. Tomorrow.

Also the roof leaked again. It dripped all over my souvenir stuffed toys, puddled on the shelf, dripped onto my in-trays which I hadn't yet done and hence made all the papers soppy AND soaked into the cardboard of the trays, so they're all warped now, then puddled on the desk and soaked the bottom of two binders including their contents, one of which was the Big Book of Stuff, and then puddled onto my barely-a-year-old carpet.

I am so goddamn over this.

The Big Book of Stuff is mostly printed with toner, but all the arts I've printed pre-toner printer were done with the old inkjet, so allllll of those bled all through everything. Amazingly the traditional art is all mostly okay, with the exception of Lynnlita's profile page which has a bit of bled ink around the hem of her dress. The original drawing of the yrae survived, though. I've chucked all the digital art--folder wouldn't close with all the sodden paper and also they're ruined anyway.

    UGH.

I mean I've been wanting to reprint the Big Book of Stuff anyway, design it in InDesign, add in all the Character 145 stuff, but not like this. Again, I say, UGH.

But then I made this for dinner and everything is awesome.

AND. Fitness is working! Onnnnn Tuesday? Wednesday? When it was cold and pissing with rain and the roof leaked. On that day, I wore pants to work for the first time in months, and my normal black work pants that I've worn all through winter are baggy enough now that they don't fit! I can instead fit an old pair that I couldn't fit anymore! Yessssss I'm so going to be sexy and sleek and svelte and other sweet words starting with S.

    This is what happens when I don't update for a while. I'm sorry =D;;

That moment when you get to a Pivotal Moment in the writing, and it's bed time.

You just know that, whether you write it or not, you're not getting to sleep for three hours.

Also Nimay's (as yet) irrational anger is making me angry. Damnit.

Hard rubbish collection was a success, every last piece of crap was picked up, woo! God that is such a weight off. I love throwing things out you guys. SPACE. GLORIOUS SPACE. I've also taken my bike into the back... garden, for want of a better word... so that doesn't take up space in the garage anymore. I'll be taking down the shelf on the left over the weekend, though. OR maybe just lift it up. Anyway, so I don't have to hunch over to get into the car.

I also got another quote (mostly) from the local guys for curtains. Significantly cheaper than Spotlight. The guy just knows his stuff so much better than the Spotlight lady did. Like, she just took down what I said and did exactly what I asked; local guy made recommendations about how I can save money and make things look cleaner, like by getting a roller blind instead of sheer curtains, and if I make the living room curtains 20cm shorter that'll save an entire length of fabric, and all I lose is 20cm of window either side when they're open. Also, supporting local business A++. The only thing is that I'm not a huge fan of their fabrics, but he said just bring up the samples from Spotlight and he can probably get them for cheaper than Spotlight, too. So. Win on all sides :D

Tonight's project is to (maybe) finish coding up the character master list. I'm up to 86/145 so... probably won't get it done tonight but I'll at least knock off another 40-odd.

Tomorrow I'm going to try and remember/be arsed to ring electricians. Lalalaaaa I have no idea what I'm doing!

I have sent through an email to the Government to see about getting money for my unpaid leave I was owed from Flinders Street, so we'll see where that goes. The website was spectacularly unhelpful and just said to call/email if I wanted to find out more about making a claim. I was expecting a form to fill out. Governments like forms. Still, we'll see where that goes. I have zero hopes of getting anything out of the administrators so let's try for the Government. They also mention getting paid out in lieu of having been given notice, so that'd be another two weeks on top of the two weeks' leave, so almost a month's worth of pay in some way shape or form that I'd really like back. It could pay for my lighting! That'd be nice.

Still haven't had a word from the winning bidder on my camera =/ I've left a message saying if I still don't hear anything from you by tomorrow evening, I'm contacting ebay. Ebay gives the buyer 4 days to pay up and then I can give the next bidder down the chance to buy it instead. All this for $16, ugh .-.

What's next on the list? Format Rust and Tarnish, yes. That's tonight's project, then. I can at least get Rust done, if not the two of them.

    EDIT Found a form, yaaaaay.

EDIT2 Balls, they want me to scan a million documents. FINE. Guess I won't be doing all that formatting tonight then.

EDIT3 Oh frigging piss balls I have to get certified proof of citizenship meaning getting a scan of my passport signed by a JP. FRIGGING HELL. That is Not Fun. I'm going to bed.
